About us

Effective Systems is a Houston based Management Consulting firm that provides services in the areas of Organizational Development, Leadership Development and Executive Coaching. The firm was founded in 1980 by Dr. Miguel Bernal, a pioneer in the field of applied behavioral science. In 1990, Chris Bernal joined his father to help expand the firm and is the current President. He brought his systems perspective approach to integrate technology and applied behavioral science to create practical talent development programs and interventions. Effective Systems has provided services to both Fortune 500 companies and small companies in the USA, UK, Europe, Mexico and many Latin American countries.

Simply stated, our mission is to convert knowledge into action and move from action to results. Effective Systems’ best contributions are made within a cross-cultural setting where the best characteristics of different cultures are forged in an effort to optimize business strategies and results.

Specialization

Chris' mission is to lead executives and senior teams to new levels of performance effectiveness by helping them apply knowledge that they already have or will acquire. His broad international experience working in a wide range of development initiatives adds a rare perspective in complex business situations.

Business Experience

Chris' 25+ years of management and consulting experience includes executive development and coaching, senior team development, performance management systems and work redesign of organizations. His approach to consulting is "learning-by-doing"; therefore, his consulting processes often include simulations, practical hands-on activities, and active-learning.

Chris enjoys designing and implementing OD interventions aimed at assisting clients in the US, Canada, the UK and Latin America to better utilize their human resources to achieve business strategies and results. These activities may range from total systems change to individual coaching depending on the scope and scale of the assignment. The countries Chris has consulted in include: USA, England, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Brazil. The industries Chris has consulted in include: High Tech, Pharmaceuticals, Manufacturing, Oil and Gas, and Banking.

Education

Chris holds a M.S. (with honors) in Organization Development from The American University in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with National Training Laboratories (NTL). He is certified in The Birkman Method® and The Management Feedback System® coaching process as well as several 360 multi-rater instruments including Lominger’s (Korn/Ferry) 360. He holds a coaching certificate from CoachLab International. Chris is fluent in both English and Spanish.

  • Executive Coaching & Leadership Development

  • Our approach in developing leadership capability is not to assist leaders to understand the principles of leadership, but rather how to apply them. The idea is to help them translate theory and research findings into practice in their day-to-day activities in support of business strategy and results.

    These programs are focused on aligning executive behaviors to business strategy, assessing leadership practices, and leveraging the leadership capacity throughout the organization.

  • Business Oriented Team Building

  • Reaching high levels of team performance is not a trivial feat. Along the way are many pitfalls teams must overcome to sustain a high level output. We help team members establish the right conditions for success tailored to their specific conditions.   • Our approach is to help clients connect business strategy to competency-based workforce development and to identify high performers and successors for key positions to sustain the "Leadership Pipeline".

  • Process Consultation Interventions

  • These interventions are aimed at helping clients improve their skills at perceiving, understanding, and acting upon the process events that occur within the client's environment. This way they achieve higher levels of commitment/ownership of the solutions they identified and the actions they are ready to take to bring about the desired changes.
